Fundamentals Neutral

Lower oil and yields support today's bounce, but a hawkish Fed with a December hike priced in caps it.

Dollar index
101.96, flat on the day (102.00 prior close); no fresh push either way.
10-year Treasury yield
About 4.98 to 4.99%, down from 5.22% a week ago and near 5.35% earlier this month; lower yields cut the cost of holding gold.
Federal Reserve
Decision Wednesday 2:00 PM ET. Futures price about a 90% chance of a hold at 3.75 to 4.00%, but about 80% odds of a December hike (CME FedWatch via Reuters) keep the upside capped.
US data
Durable goods and consumer confidence Tuesday, third-quarter growth and September inflation (Personal Consumption Expenditures) Thursday.
Central bank buying
The People's Bank of China bought about 21 to 23 tonnes in September, its largest month in about three years (Kitco, World Gold Council); a steady floor under dips.
Geopolitics
Hopes of easing United States and Iran hostilities, with Qatari mediation, offset by Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia; mixed for safe-haven demand.
Oil
West Texas crude 101.26 and Brent 110.32 dollars, both lower today after six-month highs last week; cooler oil eases inflation and hike fears.

Sentiment Negative

Fund outflows, shrinking speculative length and a crowded retail long outweigh the softer headlines.

News tone
Cautious rebound fading: Reuters (via CNBC) had spot up 0.6% at 4,020.60 at 2:09 PM ET, with December futures settling 0.8% higher at 4,038.40; StoneX expects light trading around 4,000 into the Fed. Spot has since eased to about 4,010.
CFTC positioning
Managed money net long 104,206 contracts on Oct 20, down 2,883 and down for several straight weeks from 144,747 in late August. Next report Friday.
SPDR Gold Shares
1,041.65 tonnes on Oct 23 after three straight days of outflows; minus 17.39 tonnes on the week and minus 14.05 tonnes month to date.
Retail positioning
About 86% of IG clients are long spot gold, a crowded long that contrarians read as negative.
